Testing AI Chat Support for Adults with Autism

Not a traditional drug trial — this study doesn't follow the standard phase structure.

What is this trial?

This study is testing whether an AI-powered digital companion can help adults with autism set and reach personal goals—like improving work skills or building friendships—as well as traditional one-on-one coaching with a human counselor. About 38 people will join, and researchers will see which approach works best and feels most helpful.

Many adults with autism struggle with employment, education, and friendships, but there aren't enough affordable support services available. This trial explores whether a digital AI companion could be a helpful, scalable way to provide personalized goal coaching to people who need it.

Do you qualify?

You likely qualify if…

  • you have a formal autism diagnosis from a qualified healthcare professional
  • you are currently employed, volunteering, or attending college or vocational school
  • you can drive or independently use public transportation or ride-share services
  • you can manage your own finances and make medical decisions
  • you have a smartphone with text messaging capability available 24/7
  • you can read, understand spoken and written English, and complete surveys on your own

You likely don't qualify if…

  • you have an intellectual disability
  • you have a serious mental illness that required psychiatric evaluation, hospitalization, or emergency care in the past month
  • you have had suicidal thoughts or attempts in the past month
  • you have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder in the past month
  • you are currently pregnant or have planned absences that would interfere with the study

What participation looks like

You will be randomly assigned to either use an AI digital companion or work with a human counselor for goal coaching. Both groups will work on setting and achieving personal goals over the study period. You'll complete surveys to share your experiences, and you may be asked to identify a trusted friend, family member, or mentor who can provide additional feedback about how you're doing.
