Understanding Sudden Unexplained Deaths in People With Epilepsy

Researchers at NYU Langone Health are studying sudden unexplained deaths in people with epilepsy—a rare but serious outcome that we don't yet fully understand. This study compares the medical information of people with epilepsy who have died suddenly with living people who have epilepsy, to identify patterns and risk factors. The researchers are particularly interested in whether certain epilepsy medications play a role.

Sudden unexplained death in people with epilepsy is rare but devastating, and doctors don't yet know what causes it or how to prevent it. By learning more about the risk factors and what happens in the body, researchers hope to eventually find ways to protect people with epilepsy.
