Testing new vaccine approaches to protect pregnant women from malaria

This is a laboratory study testing new vaccine candidates designed specifically to protect pregnant women and their babies from malaria. Researchers will collect blood samples from pregnant women in Mali who currently have malaria, then use those samples to test whether the new vaccines can produce the same type of protective antibodies that naturally develop in women who are repeatedly exposed to malaria over time.

Malaria during pregnancy is a serious problem that can harm both mothers and babies, causing low birth weight, anemia, and high blood pressure. Current malaria vaccines may not work well for pregnant women, so this research aims to develop better vaccine options specifically designed to protect this vulnerable group and their unborn children.
