Tracking lung valve treatment outcomes in emphysema patients

This is a long-term study following patients with severe emphysema who receive one-way endobronchial valves — small devices placed inside the airways to reduce lung volume and improve breathing. Researchers will track how well the treatment works, whether it improves lung function and exercise capacity, and whether the benefits seen in earlier clinical trials actually happen in everyday medical practice across the Netherlands.

New bronchoscopic treatments for emphysema have shown promise in controlled trials, but doctors need to know whether these benefits hold true when patients receive the treatment at different hospitals in routine care. This study will create a national database to monitor safety, effectiveness, and outcomes — and to help optimize how this new treatment is used going forward.
