Understanding how the intestines heal in inflammatory bowel disease

Researchers want to understand why some people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) don't heal well after treatment with anti-TNF therapy, a common biologic medication. By comparing tissue samples from IBD patients starting anti-TNF therapy with samples from people without IBD and people with other conditions also taking anti-TNF therapy, the study will look at how genes and cell energy production differ during the healing process.

Many people with IBD don't respond well to the medication or lose improvement over time, which can lead to serious complications like surgery or cancer. Understanding the basic biology of why healing fails in some patients could help doctors develop better treatments in the future.
