Heart Imaging Scans to Predict Heart Disease Outcomes

The CHART Study is looking at a special type of heart imaging called coronary CT angiography (CCTA) to better predict which patients with coronary artery disease will have future heart problems. Researchers want to understand how different features of plaques in your arteries — including their appearance, surrounding inflammation, and blood flow patterns — relate to your long-term outcomes. This study will help doctors decide which patients truly need procedures like stent placement versus those who can do well with medication alone.

Current methods for deciding who needs heart procedures don't catch all patients at risk — some people continue having heart problems even after treatment, while others may get unnecessary procedures. Doctors have noticed that some dangerous plaques don't block blood flow much, but still cause heart attacks. This study exists to find better ways to identify high-risk plaques and determine the best treatment strategy for each patient.
