Timing of radiation therapy with breast reconstruction surgery

This trial is testing the best timing for radiation therapy in breast cancer patients who need mastectomy (breast removal) and immediate breast reconstruction using the DIEP flap technique—a procedure that rebuilds the breast using tissue from your abdomen. The study will compare giving radiation therapy before surgery versus after surgery to see which approach is safer, causes fewer complications, and leads to better quality of life and appearance.

Radiation therapy is often needed after breast cancer surgery, but radiation can damage healthy tissue and delay other treatments. By giving radiation before surgery instead of after, doctors hope to protect healthy donor tissue and avoid delays in your care while still effectively treating the cancer.
