Doctors treating advanced melanoma often use a type of immunotherapy called anti-PD-1, but not all patients benefit from it. This trial is developing an artificial intelligence tool that analyzes visible sun damage on the skin around your original melanoma scar to predict whether this medication is likely to work well for you—avoiding unnecessary treatment in patients who won't respond.
Currently, doctors use expensive genetic tests to predict who will respond to this medication. This study aims to create a simpler, free tool based on visible skin changes that any doctor can use to make smarter treatment decisions.
Do you qualify?
You likely qualify if…
you have stage 3 or 4 melanoma that cannot be surgically removed, or an advanced skin cancer like squamous cell or basal cell carcinoma
you are starting or have recently started treatment with anti-PD-1 immunotherapy (with or without other immune treatments)
you are willing to have photographs taken of the area around your original cancer scar
you are an adult able to provide written consent
for retrospective participants: you have been treated with this medication for at least 90 days with at least 6 months of follow-up
You likely don't qualify if…
you have received chemotherapy before starting immunotherapy
you are currently taking high-dose steroids (more than 10 mg per day)
you have a weakened immune system due to HIV, transplant, or blood disorders
you have developed a loss of skin color (vitiligo) at the cancer scar site due to treatment
your original cancer is in a location that cannot be photographed, such as inside the eye or in the mouth
What participation looks like
You will have photographs taken of your skin around your original melanoma scar. If you are joining the retrospective group, this is a one-time collection of photos. If you are in the prospective group, you will be followed over time while receiving your immunotherapy, with photos taken at regular intervals. Researchers will also review your medical records to track how well the treatment works for you.
