Testing a heart medication for patients in severe heart failure crisis

This study is testing whether empagliflozin, a medication already used for heart failure, can help patients who are in cardiogenic shock—a medical emergency where the heart suddenly can't pump enough blood to the body. Researchers want to know if starting this medication early, while patients are recovering in the hospital, can reduce death rates, prevent rehospitalization, and help the heart heal. The treatment will be compared to standard care alone.

When patients are in severe heart failure crisis, doctors don't have clear guidance on which heart medications to use safely in the first days of recovery. Many standard heart medications can dangerously lower blood pressure or harm kidney function during this critical time. This trial exists to find out whether this medication can help patients recover without causing these dangerous side effects.
