Testing smaller radiation treatment areas for nasopharyngeal cancer

This is a large study comparing two different ways of planning radiation therapy for people with newly diagnosed nasopharyngeal cancer. Researchers want to know whether reducing the size of the radiation treatment area — by targeting only the tumor itself plus a small margin — works just as well as the traditional approach of treating the tumor, a margin around it, and the entire nasopharynx (the upper part of the throat behind the nose).

Radiation therapy can damage healthy tissue, cause side effects, and affect quality of life. Doctors believe that smaller, more precise treatment areas might control the cancer equally well while reducing harm to nearby healthy tissues and reducing long-term side effects like pain or difficulty swallowing.
