Follow-up colonoscopy screening benefits in adults over 75

This study is looking at whether older Veterans benefit from surveillance colonoscopy — repeat screening colonoscopies done after polyps are removed — and whether the risks of these procedures outweigh the benefits. Researchers will review medical records and health outcomes for Veterans aged 75 and older to understand who actually needs these follow-up colonoscopies and who might be harmed by them.

Colorectal cancer is a serious health problem, but repeat colonoscopy screening in people over 75 can cause serious complications like bleeding or hospitalization. Right now, many older Veterans get these follow-up colonoscopies automatically, but doctors don't have clear evidence showing whether this actually prevents cancer in older adults or if the harms outweigh the benefits. This study aims to fill that gap so doctors can make better, safer decisions.
