This trial is testing a new therapy called Seeking Safety that has been adapted specifically for Deaf adults who use American Sign Language. The therapy is designed to help people who are dealing with both problem drinking and trauma at the same time. This is the first large-scale study of its kind in the Deaf community.
Deaf Americans experience significantly higher rates of problem drinking and trauma than the general population, but there are currently no evidence-based treatments designed for Deaf clients. The new treatment addresses this gap by using American Sign Language and storytelling to match how Deaf adults learn and communicate best.

If you are chosen for this study, you will attend 12 one-hour therapy sessions over six months, delivered online via secure video chat by a Deaf therapist. You will either receive the new Seeking Safety therapy with the Signs of Safety toolkit (which uses storytelling and visual examples in ASL), or you will receive supportive counseling as usual. You will also complete brief online surveys to track how you are doing.
