Smaller lung surgery after chemotherapy and immunotherapy for advanced lung cancer

This trial is testing whether segmentectomy — a smaller type of lung surgery that removes only a small section of the lung — is safe and works well for patients whose advanced lung cancer has shrunk after receiving chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments beforehand. Right now, doctors aren't sure if this smaller surgery is appropriate for patients whose cancer started out advanced but got smaller, even though smaller surgeries tend to help patients with early-stage lung cancer live longer and feel better.

Recent treatments like chemotherapy and immunotherapy have become very good at shrinking advanced lung cancers down to a smaller size. At the same time, research shows that smaller lung surgeries lead to better long-term survival and quality of life compared to removing an entire lung section — but doctors have not yet studied whether this smaller surgery is safe for patients whose cancers started advanced and were then shrunk by treatment.
