How nutrition affects bowel disease outcomes and recovery

This research study is looking at the connection between nutrition, muscle health, and how well treatments work for people with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis). Researchers want to understand whether malnutrition and loss of muscle mass affect treatment outcomes and surgical recovery. The study will follow patients who are starting a new advanced medication or having surgery to see how their nutritional status relates to their clinical results.

Poor nutrition is common in inflammatory bowel disease and makes outcomes worse—yet it's often overlooked in routine care. Current methods of checking whether patients are malnourished don't work well. This study exists to understand which nutritional measures actually matter for predicting how patients will do, so doctors can better support people before and after treatment.
