Can heart rhythm patients stop blood thinners after ablation?

This trial is testing whether people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) who have had successful catheter ablation — a procedure to fix the rhythm problem — still need to take blood thinning medications. Researchers will randomly assign patients to either continue taking oral anticoagulants like dabigatran, rivaroxaban, or apixaban, or to stop taking these medications entirely. The study will monitor both groups for two years to see if stopping the medication is safe or if it increases the risk of stroke or bleeding.

Currently, doctors aren't sure how long patients need to take blood thinners after a successful ablation procedure. Some patients may not need them if their heart rhythm stays normal, which could reduce unnecessary bleeding risks. This study will provide clear evidence to help doctors make better decisions about post-ablation care.
