A specialized clinic helping young adults manage weight and heart health with mental illness

This trial is testing whether a specialized metabolic care clinic can help young adults with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder manage their weight and reduce their risk of heart disease. Many people taking antipsychotic medications experience weight gain and metabolic problems, which increase the risk of serious health complications. This study will compare whether patients who receive care from a specialized metabolic clinic—with regular check-ins and personalized treatment plans—do better at losing weight and improving their overall health than those receiving standard care.

People with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder often have shorter lifespans and higher rates of heart disease, largely due to weight gain and metabolic problems caused by their psychiatric medications. Current mental health care often doesn't adequately address these physical health risks, so this trial is testing whether a dedicated metabolic care clinic can fill that gap.
