Understanding how viral infections trigger symptoms in chronic lung disease

This research study is trying to understand why viral infections — like colds and flu — cause sudden symptom flare-ups in people with chronic lung diseases such as COPD and bronchiectasis. By closely monitoring your symptoms and health status from the start of the study, and then checking for viruses when your symptoms get worse, researchers hope to learn exactly how viruses trigger these flare-ups and how your immune system responds.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when people with chronic lung disease stayed home, their symptom flare-ups dropped dramatically — suggesting viruses play a major role. However, doctors don't yet fully understand this connection or when to use antiviral treatments instead of antibiotics. This study aims to fill that gap by catching flare-ups early and testing for viruses before they become severe.
