Testing a capsule sponge to monitor Barrett's esophagus

This trial is testing whether a new capsule sponge device called EndoSign can detect precancerous and cancerous changes in the esophagus as well as a traditional camera procedure (endoscopy) does. If it works, this simpler test might one day replace the more invasive endoscopy for monitoring patients with extensive Barrett's esophagus, a condition where the lining of the esophagus changes due to chronic acid reflux.

Right now, patients with extensive Barrett's esophagus need frequent endoscopies — an uncomfortable procedure where a camera is threaded down the throat — to check for dangerous changes. Researchers are exploring whether this new capsule sponge could be a gentler, easier alternative that patients might be more willing to use regularly.
