Using gut bacteria patterns to screen for colorectal cancer

Researchers are developing a new way to screen for colorectal cancer by analyzing the bacteria naturally present in your gut. Instead of relying only on current blood-based screening tests, scientists have discovered that certain patterns of gut bacteria can signal whether someone may have colorectal cancer or precancerous growths. This study will collect stool samples from over 1,000 people to build and test this new screening tool.

Current colorectal cancer screening tests miss some cancers and sometimes send people for unnecessary procedures. Research shows that changes in gut bacteria are linked to colorectal cancer, so this medication-free approach could become a more accurate, non-invasive way to catch cancer and precancerous growths earlier.
