What is this trial?

Aromatase inhibitors are the most common hormone therapy used to treat hormone-positive breast cancer. This study is looking at how aromatase inhibitor therapy affects heart and blood vessel health over the long term—specifically checking whether the medication changes how the heart and vessels function and structure as time goes on. Researchers will compare women who took this medication 1, 5, or 10 years ago to similar women who never had cancer.

We know this medication is linked to a higher risk of heart problems, but we don't yet understand exactly how it damages the heart and blood vessels over time. This study will help doctors understand what changes happen in the body and which warning signs to look for early, so we can better protect breast cancer survivors' heart health.

Do you qualify?

You likely qualify if…

you are biologically female and postmenopausal (at least 1 year without a period)
you were diagnosed with stage I, II, or III hormone-positive breast cancer that did not have HER2 expression
you have been treated with aromatase inhibitor therapy (at least 1 year out from diagnosis if enrolled in the 1-year group, or at least 2 years of treatment if in the 5- or 10-year groups)
you have received surgery and/or radiation therapy as part of your cancer treatment
you are able to exercise and walk without mobility aids like a wheelchair or walker

You likely don't qualify if…

you have been treated with tamoxifen (a different hormone therapy) before or around the time of menopause
you have or show signs of heart disease, diabetes, or kidney disease, including chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or swelling in your ankles
you have had a recent heart attack, stroke, heart failure, or serious heart rhythm problems
you have extreme claustrophobia that would prevent you from undergoing medical imaging
you have been diagnosed with any cancer other than skin cancer

What participation looks like

You would come for one study visit where researchers will perform several tests to check your heart and blood vessel health. These tests include heart imaging, blood pressure checks, blood work, tests of how your vessels respond to position changes, and cognitive (thinking) tests. The visit may also include questions about your diet, activity level, and lifestyle. You will be matched with a woman of similar age and weight who did not have cancer so researchers can compare your results.
