Testing a heart rhythm medication for frequent irregular heartbeats

The UNIFLECA study is testing whether flecainide, a heart rhythm medication, can reduce frequent premature ventricular contractions (irregular heartbeats) and prevent or reverse heart muscle weakening in patients whose hearts are otherwise structurally normal. Researchers will follow participants for three years to see if this medication reduces the burden of irregular heartbeats and improves heart function over time.

Many people have frequent irregular heartbeats that seem harmless at first, but when they occur very often (more than 5% of the time), they can actually weaken the heart muscle over time. This study exists to find out whether this medication can effectively reduce these irregular heartbeats and prevent or reverse heart damage before it becomes serious.
