Testing a heart and kidney medication for patients with severe kidney disease

This is a pilot study testing eplerenone, a medication that helps the heart, in patients who have both heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and severe chronic kidney disease. Most previous large heart failure trials excluded people with severe kidney problems due to safety concerns. This study wants to see if the medication can still help these patients safely.

Previous studies have worried that this medication might harm the kidneys or cause dangerous potassium levels in people with severe kidney disease, so they excluded these patients from testing. However, newer data suggests these patients might actually benefit from the treatment, so researchers want to carefully test whether it's safe and works for them.
