Pain relief injection for rib fractures in emergency care

This trial is testing a procedure called a serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) — a numbing injection guided by ultrasound — to help people with multiple broken ribs on one side of their body manage pain. Researchers want to see if this injection works better and safer than standard pain medications (like opioids) that are typically given in the emergency department. The goal is to reduce pain, help you breathe more easily, and prevent serious breathing complications that can happen after rib fractures.

Broken ribs cause severe pain that often leads people to breathe more shallowly, which can result in pneumonia and other serious breathing problems. While opioid pain medications are commonly used, they carry risks like addiction, drowsiness, and further difficulty breathing. This medication offers a potentially safer way to numb the area around the injured ribs without those risks.
