Does a new lupus medication prevent organ damage long-term?

Researchers want to understand whether belimumab, a medication used to treat lupus for over 10 years, can prevent serious organ damage — especially to the kidneys, nervous system, heart, and blood — beyond what we already know it does. This study will compare medical records from people who took belimumab with those who received standard lupus care to see if the medication changes the long-term course of the disease.

While this medication is known to reduce lupus flares and slow damage over time, doctors don't have clear real-world evidence on whether it prevents major, life-threatening complications like kidney disease, strokes, seizures, or heart problems. This study aims to answer that important question.
