What is this trial?

This trial is testing Direct Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (DSLT), a newer laser procedure designed to lower the pressure inside your eye in glaucoma patients. Unlike traditional glaucoma treatments that rely on daily eye drops, this laser treatment aims to reduce your eye pressure without requiring ongoing medications after the procedure. Researchers want to see if DSLT can achieve a meaningful drop in eye pressure (more than 20%) in people who have just been diagnosed with glaucoma and haven't started any treatment yet.

Most glaucoma patients are currently treated with daily eye drops, which can be hard to remember to take consistently and may cause side effects. This study exists to explore whether a one-time laser procedure could be a better first-line option for newly diagnosed patients, potentially reducing the need for lifelong medication and improving quality of life.

Do you qualify?

You likely qualify if…

you are 18 years old or older
you have been newly diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension and have not yet received any glaucoma treatment
your eye pressure is higher than 21 mmHg
you are able to keep your head and eyes still during the laser procedure

You likely don't qualify if…

you have had any previous glaucoma surgery or laser treatment
you have been taking glaucoma medications for an extended period
you have a type of glaucoma other than open-angle glaucoma (such as angle-closure or glaucoma from eye trauma)
you have other serious eye conditions like advanced cataracts or advanced macular degeneration
you have a pupil that cannot shrink to 4 mm or smaller, or you have uncontrolled eye movements or tremors

What participation looks like

If you join this study, you would receive the DSLT laser procedure performed by an eye specialist. After the treatment, you would be monitored over a 6-month period to see how well your eye pressure is controlled without the need for daily eye drops. You would have follow-up visits to measure your eye pressure and check your eye health to determine whether the laser treatment was effective for you.
