What is this trial?

This trial is testing a new type of vaccine called an , which is designed to work like a training program for your immune system. The vaccine teaches your body to recognize and fight hepatitis B virus, which is the cause of your liver cancer. Researchers believe that by strengthening your immune response after a liver transplant, this treatment may reduce the risk of cancer coming back.

Liver cancer returns in about 30–45% of patients even after successful transplantation, and there is currently no specific treatment that targets the hepatitis B virus in people who already have cancer. This medication represents a new approach using mRNA vaccine technology, which has shown promise in helping the immune system fight cancer cells.

Do you qualify?

You likely qualify if…

you are at least 18 years old
you have been diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer)
you have hepatitis B infection (positive for hepatitis B surface antigen)
your doctor believes you are a candidate for liver transplantation and you are willing to have one
you are in reasonably good health overall, as measured by your ability to carry out daily activities

You likely don't qualify if…

you have been diagnosed with another type of cancer in the past 5 years (with some exceptions for skin cancers or very early cancers)
you have an active or past autoimmune disease such as lupus, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, or rheumatoid arthritis
you have severe fluid buildup in your abdomen that requires ongoing treatment
you have untreated or uncontrolled heart disease or serious heart symptoms
you have untreated brain metastases (cancer that has spread to the brain) or severe brain-related complications from liver disease

What participation looks like

You would receive four doses of the , likely given as injections during the waiting period before your liver transplant and possibly after transplantation. The study will monitor how well the vaccine works, how your immune system responds, and whether it helps prevent your cancer from returning after you receive your new liver. You will have regular clinic visits and blood tests to track your progress throughout the study.
