Two weight loss surgeries for obesity and acid reflux compared

This trial is testing two different weight loss surgery approaches in people who have both obesity and acid reflux disease. The first approach, called Nissen-Sleeve Gastrectomy, combines a stomach-reduction surgery with a special anti-reflux wrap. The second approach, called Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, is an established surgery that reroutes the digestive system. Researchers want to see which procedure works better at controlling acid reflux while helping people lose weight.

Standard stomach-reduction surgery (sleeve gastrectomy) can actually make acid reflux worse in some patients, even though it's the most common weight loss surgery worldwide. Gastric bypass is known to help with acid reflux but is more complex and carries risks of nutritional problems. This trial exists to find out whether the newer Nissen-Sleeve approach can provide the best of both worlds—effective weight loss and reflux control without the complications of bypass surgery.
