Tracking HIV prevention medication safety and effectiveness across Italy

The PrIDE study is following about 5,000 HIV-negative adults across Italy who are taking or planning to take PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis)—a medication that helps prevent HIV infection. Researchers want to understand how well this medication works in everyday life, how safe it is, and how well people stick with taking it. The study will collect health information, test results, and answers to surveys over at least 10 years.

While this medication is known to be effective, researchers need real-world data from diverse people across Italy to understand how it works outside of controlled research settings, who benefits most from it, and how to help people take it consistently. They also want to track any side effects and monitor for other sexually transmitted infections.
