Complete heart health screening during lung cancer screening visits

What is this trial?

This trial is testing whether adding heart disease screening to routine lung cancer screening can help find heart problems before they cause a heart attack in people who have smoked heavily. Researchers will use CT scans that are already being done for lung cancer screening to look for signs of heart disease. The goal is to catch dangerous heart conditions early, when they can still be treated.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in smokers, and many people don't realize they have it until they have a sudden heart attack. This study exists to see if screening smokers for heart disease during lung cancer screening visits can find these hidden problems before they become life-threatening.

Do you qualify?

You likely qualify if…

you are between 60 and 79 years old
you have a significant smoking history (at least 35 pack-years) and are either currently smoking or quit within the last 10 years
you are willing and able to attend follow-up visits over at least 5 years
you are already enrolled in a lung cancer screening program with recent CT scan images available
you can read and understand the study information and provide written consent

You likely don't qualify if…

you have a personal history of lung cancer, kidney cancer, melanoma, or breast cancer
you have had recent unusual findings in your lungs that are being investigated
you weigh more than 140 kilograms (about 308 pounds), as this makes the CT scan difficult to perform
you have a serious medical condition or very short life expectancy that would make it hard to participate
you have a recent history of alcohol or drug abuse in the past 12 months

What participation looks like

You will be part of the lung cancer screening program and will receive additional heart disease screening. Some participants will receive follow-up care coordinated by nurses at the hospital, while others will have follow-up managed by their regular doctor. You will need to attend visits and complete heart health evaluations, with a follow-up visit about 1 year after your initial screening. The study will continue to monitor your health for at least 5 years.
