How lung infection affects heart surgery recovery and outcomes

This research study is looking at patients who have had coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)—a surgical procedure to improve blood flow to the heart. The study wants to understand what happens when patients develop a lung infection after this surgery, and how that infection might affect their heart condition and overall recovery. Researchers will compare patients who develop a hospital-acquired lung infection after surgery with those who don't, to see if the infection changes how well their heart does long-term.

Lung infections are a common complication after heart bypass surgery, occurring in about 3 to 42 percent of patients. While we know lung infections are serious, there hasn't been much research on how they specifically affect the heart in patients who have already had bypass surgery. This study exists to fill that gap and help doctors better understand and manage these complications.
