Testing a steroid to reduce heart damage after a heart attack

This trial is testing whether methylprednisolone, a steroid medication, can help reduce heart damage when given quickly during treatment for a severe type of heart attack called STEMI. When blood flow is restored to a blocked artery, the heart muscle can be injured by the sudden return of blood itself—a problem called reperfusion injury. Researchers believe this medication might calm the inflammation that occurs during this process and preserve more of the heart's function.

Despite improvements in heart attack treatment, about 1 in 10 patients still die within a year, and another 1 in 10 develop heart failure—a serious condition with a 50% death rate within 5 years. This medication is being tested because inflammation appears to be a major driver of the heart damage that happens during reperfusion, and controlling that inflammation might save lives and prevent heart failure.
