Understanding Muscle Weakness in Hospitalized Patients Outside Intensive Care

This research study is investigating muscle and nerve weakness that can develop in patients hospitalized for serious acute illness outside of intensive care units. Researchers want to understand how often this weakness occurs, what it looks like clinically, and how it affects recovery. The study will compare patients whose illness has caused organ dysfunction to those with acute illness but without organ complications.

Muscle and nerve weakness during critical illness has been well-studied in intensive care patients, but it's often overlooked in regular hospital wards where patients may have similar risk factors. By better understanding how common and serious this condition is outside the ICU, doctors can catch it earlier and develop better treatments and rehabilitation strategies.
