Building a virtual lung model using CT scans and artificial intelligence

The LUCE study is collecting chest CT scan images and health information from about 1,000 people to build a virtual copy of the lung using artificial intelligence. Researchers will use this virtual lung model to better understand how lung nodules, lung tumors, and other lung diseases develop and change over time—without needing to perform procedures on actual patients.

Doctors need better ways to understand and predict how lung diseases will behave in individual patients. By creating a virtual lung model, researchers hope to improve how they diagnose and monitor lung conditions, and eventually provide more personalized care.
