How epilepsy affects the brain's ability to understand social situations

This research study is investigating how epilepsy—particularly drug-resistant epilepsy affecting the temporal lobe—changes the brain's ability to understand other people's emotions, facial expressions, and social behaviors. Researchers will use specialized brain imaging scans to create detailed maps of the brain networks involved in social understanding and see how epilepsy alters these networks. This study aims to fill an important gap: while we know that many epilepsy patients struggle socially, we don't yet fully understand why or how the disease damages these specific brain functions.

Many people with epilepsy experience difficulties understanding social cues and connecting with others, which significantly impacts their quality of life and relationships. However, the exact brain mechanisms causing these social difficulties remain poorly understood. This research aims to create a comprehensive 'map' of how epilepsy damages the brain's social cognition network, which could eventually lead to better treatments and support.
