What is this trial?

This research study is looking at how the brain's networks — both their physical structure and electrical activity — differ in people with epilepsy compared to people without seizures. Researchers will use brain scans (MRI) and electrical recordings (EEG) to map these networks and better understand how seizures happen. This information could help doctors in the future identify which parts of the brain are causing seizures more accurately, especially for people whose seizures don't respond well to medication.

Currently, doctors struggle to pinpoint exactly where seizures originate in the brain, especially when medications don't work. Some patients need invasive brain surgery with implanted electrodes to find the seizure source, which carries risks. This study aims to develop safer, non-invasive ways to map the brain's seizure networks using standard scans and external recordings.

Do you qualify?

You likely qualify if…

you have been diagnosed with focal or generalized epilepsy confirmed by a specialist
you have had at least one brain MRI scan that includes standard imaging sequences
you have had at least one resting-state EEG recording (brain electrical activity test)
you are between 6 and 65 years old
you are able to complete a neuropsychological assessment (cognitive and behavioral testing)

You likely don't qualify if…

your epilepsy was caused by a stroke or brain tumor
you are outside the age range of 6 to 65 years
your brain imaging studies are incomplete
you don't have a resting-state EEG recording on file
you cannot participate in neuropsychological testing

What participation looks like

If you join this study, you will have your existing brain scans (MRI) and EEG recordings reviewed by the research team — you won't need new scans unless they're part of your regular care. You will also complete a neuropsychological assessment, which involves tests and questions about memory, attention, and thinking. The study is observational, meaning researchers are studying your existing medical information and test results rather than giving you a new treatment or medication.
